Poster stamps began to appear during the late 19th century. In those early years, especially in Europe
and the US, poster stamps were used primarily to advertise exhibitions. The “Golden Age” was from
1900 to 1914. The purpose of poster stamps was to advertise products or events, promote political
causes or good works, encourage tourism and so forth. They were affixed to envelopes and invoices
and were given away with products. Large companies commissioned designers and printers to prepare
poster stamps especially for them. Smaller clients could select from thousands of stock designs and
have their imprint placed upon them.
Usually, they were about 1.5 x 2 inches. The stamps pictured here are from my collection. At a later
date, I hope to print real poster stamps by letterpress and use my (yet to be restored) pin-hole
perforator to perforate them. Until I find the time to print new stamps, I've computer-reproduced the four
images below on pressure sensitive stock and perforated them. If you would like a few of the
reproductions, send me an e-mail with your address and I'll drop some in the mail for you.
